1st VB Leicestershire Forage Cap badge

Hi all,

Latest addition to my Leicestershire Regiment collection. A white metal 1st Volunteer Battalion forage cap badge worn 1895-1902 and described and illustrated in Westlake 545. Lugged east - west and measures 25x23mm. Westlake desribes the curious choice of heraldric emblem rather than Tiger and same symbol adopted on HP and collars with unbroken wreath as per those in my album. There are, however, 1st VB cap badges with 1st VB scroll under the Tiger which I presume is the 1902-1908 period badge. Cheers Dean.

I do indeed, but the one above is available in my swaps album should someone have a Leicestershire Yeomanry item to swap (shameless plug) :D

Dean/Griff,

Nice badges and something missing from my small Leicesters collection, but I do have a consolation although I haven't seen one with the 1VB beneath the tiger. Still envious though!

My badge is available for a swap if you have a Leics Yeo or Denbigh Hussars :)

Wayne,

Another smasher and another gap to fill! Is there a maker's mark on this as my version has a gaunt plaque on it? I presume that this is lugged?

Hi Griff, Griff and Wayne,

Well chaps most exciting to see new Leicestershire badges. Griff from Pembs what a cracking 1st VB Leicesters glengarry badge and 1st VB in a different pattern to Griff's - wonder what the date difference is here? That is very nice to see so thanks for sharing that - I have the HP in QVC so nice to see in KC as well. If you ever get bored with them I know where the sunshine would keep them warm everyday ! Lived in York for 5 years and miss all of the UK and you have it so much easier to acquire such badges but always just good of you to share them with us.

Wayne - lovely 1st VB and be good to see reverse of this - missed one at auction a bit back but am hoping for the future.

Will post a few new ones this week as am in the US for work and have some more time.

Griff in Leicestershire I have some PAOY coming my way soon so fingers crossed something good for you to see there.

Cheers Dean.

Cheers, Dave

I think the version with the South Africa honour is 1902 to 1908 and thus more rare. The other version would be from 1881+/- to 1902 and so a little more common.

Good morning.

What an impressive selection of items to this fine County Regiment members have so far provided. Curiously it is one of the County Regiments to which there are few, if any, hallmarked silver badges. I can think of only a single example, offered for sale some years ago. Perhaps any member who has an example could post an illustration?

Enjoy.

Thanks for the insight ST - I had wondered if they were out there lurking in collections and hopefully making there way onto mearket.

Cheers Dean.

Good afternoon.

It is most generous to describe my modest contribution as an insight: I`m not entirely sure it quite warranted such an accolade. I will however add the information that there is presently at least one example to the 1st. VB in a private collection, and it will not be coming onto the market for a very long time.

Most interesting too to see Mr Mulchay`s illustration. Unfortunately I am unable to make the image large enough to ascertain its exact significance. Does the annotation suggest the item was executed in hallmarked silver?

It must be my declining eyesight I`m afraid : could Mr Mulchay enlarge the image, or add a word or two of explanation?

Thank you in anticipation.

Enjoy.
