General Auctions- descriptions

With so many general antique auctioneers jumping on the militaria bandwagon, the descriptions of some lots seem to leave a lot to be desired.

Here is the link to an auction catalogue for tomorrow with a few military lots-

http://www.mellorsandkirkcatalogues....111/index.html

The desciption of lot 35 only mentions a Notts and Derby cap badge but is that not a 21st Officers Cadet Battalion cap badge in the illustration ?.

The auctioneers might of course think it is a restrike and not worth mentioning, but what about the silver and tortoiseshell sweethearts ?

My thought would be to use your specialised knowledge and take advantage of the situation - and not tell everybody else.
If you know what something is and the vendor doesn't, you stand to gain.
We can't expect general auctioneers to be experts in everything. Even within the militaria community we often hear about somebody getting a bargain because a dealer or self proclaimed expert really didn't know what they were selling.
It's all part of the "fun".

Yes it can be a mixed bag at auction, some of the common items can go for
really high prices and some of the items you expect to go for a lot of money
can go for very little money . sometimes if your lucky you can get a real
bargain. last year at a local auction i managed to get a good selection of
homeguard badges all for price of £25.00 plus comission, if they had cost
four times as much it would still have been a good price. i was well pleased

Hi P.B.

Many thanks indeed for the "Heads Up", I am most grateful, I never thought I would ever see a real one let alone own it.

I am much indebted to you.

Best wishes

Gordon

Gordon,
An example of this badge was in Bosleys Postal auction of 18th May 2005 ( found it while searching for something else ) Guide price £50-£100.

Dont know what it sold for.

Many thanks, mine cost me £100 but there were other bits and pieces in the lot.

On reflection they were of negligible value!!

Best wishes

Gordon
