SA Home Comforts badges
 

Here is my collection of SA Home comforts (Huislike Geriewe) badges from WWII.

The first is crudely cast in copper with a dark wash and safety pin soldered to rear. I believe this is the first issue of badges probably c.1940

The second is a the more easily found badge in coined/stamped brass with a gilt wash and white enameling. These I believe were made by the SA Mint and probably date from 1941/42 onward.

The third is a nice SA Mint silver marked green and white enameled badge showing the dates 1939 and 1945. I believe this may be a commemorative badge or a badge of thanks for services rendered during the war.

All badges show a similar design of a soldier, airman and sailor at the center of the badge. To the right of the soldier is a cannon, to the left of the sailor, a ship and above the airman an aircraft in flight.

The 'Home Comforts' were a separate organization but associated with the 'South African Womens Auxiliary Services' (SAWAS) who took in visiting soldiers, sailors and airmen to South Africa.
They would house them in there homes, show them the sites, and provide comfort from home, etc. 'Home Comforts' also procured knitware that they supplied to the victims of the bombed areas of England.

Nice Steven, a chap up here in Durban has an amazing collection of SA Wartime non military badges from various fund raising organisations. Sadly an area that has been neglected.

That would be a collection I would really like to see. I have a fair number but always looking to add new ones.

Do you think it would be possible to get some pictures of his collection?
