Any ideas - Londonderry connection, militia?

Hi all,

Picked up a lot of items today and among of them there was as well this button - QVC, "No Surrender 1688". Like I understand it was a war cry during siege of Derry/Londonderry. Any ideas what it Is? Could it be a Tyrone militia related?

Thanks

Possibly an Apprentice Boys club button or similar?
I can't find it as military, but as you say, militia?

Did they had them even in Victorian time? Sorry, I am not originally from that part of the Europe :)

Yes, they go back centuries - I think you're closer with your suggestion of Militia although I would'nt think it's a 'Derry unit rather than Tyrone.

I don't think it is Militia.

Limerick and Londonderry have a castle as part of their design but nothing matches this button.

A nice looking button though but I can't find any Militia connection.

Cheerio,

Roy

Thanks! So, Apprentice Boys*it is. Must be one of the early ones, following military style, that fooled me.

It looks like the castle on Inniskilling buttons, and doesn't it say 1688 rather than 1866?

Yes, the Veterinary Department is very early and when formed contained only veterinary surgeons (i.e. officers), it was a first attempt to centralise veterinarian care and take it away from individual cavalry, artillery and service corps units. However it left regiments with the responsibility to provide veterinary ‘assistants’ (ranks below officer) and eventually both groups were brought together in a single, coherent Army Veterinary Corps (AVC). Your button is from the earlier period.
