Hi
In revamping my New Zealand display this badge is a mystery to me. I have been unable to find it in any of my searches.
It has ā€˜Dā€™ shaped lugs like those associated with Gault (I believe).
Could you tell me when it was worn?
Thank you
Mike

Hi Mike,
Your badge was worn prior to 17 March 1911 when this regiment was renamed 5th Mounted Rifles (Otago Hussars). A desirable badge!
Cheers, Tinto

The following is the much rarer 1st Pattern 5th Mounted Rifles (Otago Hussars) hat badge IMO circa 1911 to 1915.

Note the same fine fern leaves as the 1st Otago Mounted Rifle Volunteers, but a smaller hole to the reverse.

The following is the more common 2nd Pattern 5th Mounted Rifles (Otago Hussars) hat badge, IMO circa 1915 to 1944.

This one is made by Wellington manufacturers Mayer and Kean.

This is a very interesting discussion on the badges of the 1st Regt. Otago M.R. and the photos are great too. Thank you. Attached are pictures of a gilt example you may be interested to see.

Hi Atilla,

That badge (1st Pattern) is the first one I've seen that looks identical to the one I've got. It's so far the only pattern I've seen with the striped section on the base of the crown. (Highlighted in the image below)

Thanks for sharing

:)
