Dating brevet wings - Flight Engineer
 

Would anyone have any tips on how to date brevet/single wings?

I recently acquired these Flight Engineer wings, together with some other items. They belonged to a gent who served in the 1940s-1950s.

Any insights appreciated.

Flat versions of these flying badges are always difficult as the design is basically the same today as when they were introduced. Padded versions are not much easier except that the type of backing, old style sacking on yours, may indicate whether they are old or more recent. The gold mess dress badge has many different versions depending who made them, as they were mainly private purchase items, and I would say that accurate dating would be impossible.

To me the bullion mess is 1950s , flat wing looks 1950s padded looks just post war, 46/early fifties ....because these were used in 1940s onwards it boils down to personal opinion.
