Airborne Pegasus,from the IWM,

The following patches are those kept in the IWM archives.....I did post them for you to decide if they are real/genuine/originals......

The image represents Bellerophon riding Pegasus. It was designed by Edward Seago, the landscape artist, and had been suggested for use by Daphne du Maurier, the wife of Major-General F. A. M. 'Boy' Browning, Commander of 1st Airborne Division.

Pegasus was chosen by Browning, Daphne du Maurier had nothing to do with it. She states such in a letter reprinted on p. 28 in the Denison smock book.

I seem to remember it was her who choose the maroon colour for the airborne beret?

Maroon and Cambridge blue were Boy Brownings horse racing colours, that is where they originated from. Contrary to myth, Daphne du Maurier had nothing to do with them.

Quote from her letter: "Alas, it is with extreme reluctance that I have to tell you I had nothing to do with the Red Beret, the Pegasus sign, or the green smock. Myths die hard, and this one I am perticularly fond of, but it does not seem fair to bequeath it to succeeding generations of parachutists."

Then I guess the late Brian L. Davies is wrong. :)
