Hello All...

Ran across this one recently. Very well struck, excellent quality, 50mm from 12 o’clock to 6 o’clock. Any ideas?

It is Wrekin college OTC I think.

Although it is a Lion rampant, it is not Wrekin College (or Wellington College as it was when the badge was worn).

That didnt have the torse below and would have been in GM.

I have found that over the years this is a badge associated with Scottish Volunteer units and is kind of a generic glengarry badge from late Victorian era worn by officers , possibly in several units.

Its also possible its used in a civilian glengarry of the time.

They are always well made and with a brooch fitting like yours.

The badge minus the torse was misidentified by Hugh King as Wrekin OTC. It was not worn by the school as they wore a different lion with a scroll. The OTC was originally called Wellington College OTC and wore the same badge with a Wellington College OTC scroll before it changed title.

Thanks gentlemen! Hopefully it’s worth the 30£ I shelled out for it!

although only held on with a pin I do not like to disturb things. unfortunately moths have munched the area behind the badge. there is a slight curvature of the badge the dimensions being 47mm tall and 37mm wide.
I acquired it ages ago because it looked interesting , myself having Scottish heritage.

This badge is a generic Scottish design (like the thistle and St Andrew) and has been worn right around the empire since Victorian times, and is still in use. I saw a pipe band in Australia last year and they had this badge on their sporrans, obviously bought from a Scottish band supplier and still available.
I also saw it illustrated, without the torse, when researching a now defunct early Australian cadet corps called Cooerwul College.
I have this badge in both brass and WM, and have another WM variety slightly larger. There is a sporran in the Sydney Victoria Barracks museum with the same badge but smaller still.

I can't comment on the Scottish connection, but it was worn by the Denbighshire Constabulary (Welsh Police Force), in various guises over a number of years. See appended photo.
