1943 Smock – Offered as 1st Can Para

Smock – Offered as 1st Can Para

Due to how this smock was listed, it caused a bidding frenzy in a short time. It was over $1100 before it was pulled, I suspect it was sold offline. Nice solid original smock, however, postwar wing married up.

The smock has been relisted I suspect because the description had to be corrected. It is a post war smock made by John Gordon & co. The obvious giveaway is the nickel studs typical of late 40s to mid 50s smocks. Also the labels used by this maker were different before 1946 as you can see below.

To be fair the faded 1948 print could have easily be mistaken with 1943.
The wings might be original to the smock after all.

Very bizarre, as I messaged the seller a couple of times with no response. I didn't realize it was relisted, thanks for the update.

Cheers

Fair play to that seller. Clearly they listened to someone’s informed opinion and have taken a big financial hit in the interests of honesty. To be applauded. I’m sure 90% of sellers would’ve just let it run.

I'm quite intrigued about that smock. Not being very familiar with the topic, I'd like to know the fate of Canadian AB uniforms after 1st Can Para was disbanded at the end of the summer of 1945.
My only source of information is Ken Joyce and his book is limited on post war uniforms.
Does-it seem reasonable to assume the nucleus of Canadian paratroopers remaining continued to be equipped by the British in the late 40s as suggested by the smock discussed in this thread?
I would have imagined plenty of stock of WW2 garments existed at the time in Canada.
Thoughts appreciated.
