ATS FANY Insignia Question
 

I am wondering if in WW2 the ATS FANY drivers ever wore the "Winged MT Wheel" patch? Or, was that strictly a WWI insignia?

It was mostly a WW2 badge but I would say if anything they would have worn the unofficial winged DR badge.

I have never seen a photo of them being worn but a file at the National Archives at Kew contains some correspondence between the ATS and the War Office in January 1943 recording that ‘drivers from the [ATS] Chilwell Group’ wore MT ‘wings’.

Would the Chilwell unit possibly have worn a regimental collar dog on the left chest? If so what regiment would it be?

Chilwell was mainly 'Central Ordnance Depot Chilwell' which was HQ Vehicle Organisation which had a large number of ATS attached (over 3500) both in the Depot and as ATS/RAOC drivers to move mainly B vehicles around the country.

The most likely badge to be worn would be that of the Royal Army Service Corps as they were drivers.

Yes I agree Jon, But the RAOC also had drivers RAOC & ATS but since ATS were only attached it could be either! Chilwell also had Tank Transporters driven by RAOC. Records I have do not go into that great detail as to ATS Breast Badges.
