The Rising Sun by Lambourne
 

Over the years I’ve read many posts on the forum that Lambourne & Co made (and marked) Rising Sun badges circa WW1. So much so it seems an accepted fact.

However, following on from this thread related to British manufacturers of the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces badges I got thinking had I actually ever seen one, no I hadn’t.

Lo and behold a forum search turned up no confirmed pictures and I cannot find any on the internet searching Google.

Does anyone have an example of a Lambourne marked Rising Sun they would be willing show please?

i have an extensive collection of Rising suns and i have never seen a genuine badge.
actually, kingleys the first i have seen and as pointed out the naming on the slider is all wrong
did Lambourne & Co always name their badges? there are numerous badges that are almost certainly made in the UK judging from the style/finish etc however many are unnnamed.
i have identicle looking examples where one has no manufacture name and the other is named, generlly Tiptaft.
i do recall seeing somewhere an official order placed with Lambourne & Co for rising sun badges but i may be mistaken and i am unable to find it?
i also would like to see an example

Tad confused as in that thread kingsley did not show a Lambourne badge?

The examples shown were FN, Smith & Wright, Uniquip and an illegible plaque suspected to be Gaunt.

Like all British manufacturers of their era Lambourne & Co / Lambourne’s did not mark every single badge, no.

In fact during WW1 in general in was a minority of badges which were marked. There are a few exceptions to this rule which appears to relate to channels used to order / finance the badges.

As a maker Lambourne were notorious for the poor quality of their dies and workmanship. Most of their wares look positively wonky when stood up next to other contemporary manufacturers products.

Sadly the photos in this thread have gone kaput but just enough is visible to tease. The badge in post #2 does have a kind of wonky awkward look to the rays and crown shape just as one might expect with a Lambourne.

I have a paper copied ebay page from April 2004 with a bronzed looking Lambourne mark which until now had caused me to think they existed- looking today I see the o in Co part of the mark has the o in low position with no underscore so highly doubtful. Regards, Paul.

However Andy called fake for the legitimate reason you just mentioned so I’m very much inclined to agree it was. Bummer for whoever bought it as they paid AUD$475!

Would you be able to take a photo of the paper copy and post please? It would be most helpful.

Went for equivalent of £106.76 in 2004. Australian seller.

No luck, I was interested in Berkshire Yeomanry at the time so have images of their badges marked Lambourne and images of their men from Lambourn village, so probably came across a Lambourne Aussie badge during searches.

The 2004 badge is definitely a fake Lambourne mark.

These badges are starting to assume Elvis is really alive and has been seen myth status for me.

I’m starting to wonder if the only other ranks British maker marked Rising Sun badges are Tiptaft.

There’s clear evidence in the other thread of badges being sexed up with British makers marks to enhance their desirability to a buoyant Australian collectors market.

The prices realised for the 2004 and 2014 badges highlight the reason for doing this even if they may not be mainstream or bulk reproductions / additions. £106 and £262 respectively, ouch.
