Belgian queries

3 Attachment(s)
Hi, revisited my Belgian bits and came up with these queries. What are the two red backed badges, a ship and St George ? Secondly, is the badge with the tank and bee hive connected to the 16th Arm. Div.? and thirdly as far as I know there was only a 1st and 4th tank regiment, can anyone confirm the description and is the navy backed badge connected? Also if anyone is interested I have quite a few manufacturers variants of Signals, M. P's and line regiments for the Belgian Army as well as an album of most of the badges shown in Rosignoli's book, thanks in advance Mike

I think the second badge shows St Michael, but stand to be corrected.

Hi Leigh, you may well be right, I instantly regard anyone poking a dragon with a lance as St George but you are right the archangels also got in the act, best wishes Mike

Described as Guards Battalion No.1 (St.George) and Guards Battalion No.2 (ship). Examples shown in link.

The triple ring "Belgium army sports/ fitness patch" appears to have been available in different colours , don't know if they signified different regiments.

Didier (forum member Just) previously posted a link about these badges.

Hi Mike, thank you very much. The Kamp-Vogelsang is a fabulous site, it has explained a great deal about the Belgian Army, thank you again, best wishes Mike

I have had the two red badges for many years, and believe the ship one is 2nd Military District (Antwerp), and the St George one is 1st Military District (Brussels). Can anyone tell me if these were the original names and that they have changed name to the above Guards Bns, please?

I simply took the description from photos of a collection shown in the link (post#4) , other sites mention 'districts' .

1st District Guards Battalion

2nd District Guards Battalion

3rd District Guards Battalion

I'm still inclined to the view that Archangel Michael rather than St George is shown on the badge of 1st District Guards Battalion - particularly if the unit has a link to Brussels, Michael rather than George is the city's patron saint.

Edit - From Wikipedia, the lesser oat of arms of the city of Brussels.

There is another 'ship' badge (black outline on red ) which is described as 2nd District (for provinces of Antwerpen, East and West Flanders 1950-1973.)
