Types of Cap Badge
 

Hello,

As you most likely know, there are two types of cap badges around... Those which slide in, and those which poke in with a pin and backplate. I have a couple of questions regarding them.
Firstly, many of the pin ones are sold without a backplate. Is this how they were issued (and then worn - with just pin and badge)? Or has the plate been lost over time.
Secondly, what is the significance between the two types? Did they change from one to the other at a certain date, or are they issued as and when, for example.

I'm not sure what you mean by a 'pin and backplate - unless you are referring to Glengarry badges.
Basically 'cap badges' - as introduced in the mid 1890s - had two 'loops' (though commonly referred to as lugs )! These were punched through the cap and held by a split pin.
I 1906 these were largely superseded by 'vertical shanks' (commonly known as sliders).
however, the loops re-emerged in the 1930s.
The different types were adaped for caps or side caps.

Ah yes I meant the ones with lugs when I said pins. Some of them have backplates, while others don't, and I'm wondering whether the ones that don't have them were issued like that or if it has been lost over time.

Also, were these cap badges with lugs worn in berets around the late 90s/early 2000s, or was it sliders by then?

Some cap badges were worn pre 1890. With lugs/loops also.

The RGR cap badge is one of very few current issue badges that come with a backing plate and cotter pin. I will try and list the others:


Royal Corps of Signals (a two-part badge)
Royal Tank Regiment
Army Foundation College
Royal Gurkha Rifles
Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas
Royal Regiment of Scotland (a two-part badge)
Parachute Regiment (PRI version ?)
