I am pleased to have added this to my collection. A Lothians and Border Horse soft cap. This cap introduced in 1916. The liner of this one has been removed.

Very nice indeed. First I have ever seen. But it needs the badge, which is as common as the cap is scarce.

A great find indeed, could you tell me if the blue band is sewn to the cap or just secured by the chinstrap buttons, it appears from the photographs to have a seam at the rear and wondered if it could be removed if required?

Regards, Simon.

That's what I thought Jerry but also appears to have had the chin strap buttons pushed through the band.

Hi Simon,

The band is secured at the back by hooks and eyes but the chinstrap buttons are sewn through the band rendering it impossible to remove without cutting off the buttons. So it may have started out as removable but was secured by sewing the buttons down as I suspect loose the band was prone to slipping. There is ghosting behind the buttons suggesting that they were applied some time ago. The removed liner would indicate use in Salonika where the 1/1st LBH A and D Sqns served.

Many thanks for the detailed reply, as you state, I imagine the band would have been prone to slipping off and sewing through the buttons is a very logical solution. Lovely example of a very rare cap.

All the best, Simon.

Nice cap, thanks for sharing the images.

Is there a back mark on the buttons?

Rob
