I would certainly be interested in the result and findings of a forensic examination of the fabric he is peddling, which he claims to actually be taken from enemy aeroplanes, circa Great War.

General thoughts-lots of Imperial German flags turning up for sale these days. I would doubt they are all original. Arial darts might also be an item easy to reproduce. Regards, Paul. (Seller has these for sale but I could not say if they are good or not.)

Two more Newfoundland badges sold recently by same seller under different names 1111destintion and 5555 destination. All in Ipswich area.

Also everyone favourite faker from Greece and Bulgaria has done the flat back Newfoundland badge.

Hi All

Yes be very wary of any Newfoundland badges that turn up on ebay or like sites. There are a couple of good copies of the WWI NEWFOUNDLAND badge out there some of which I am sure are being sold both by sellers who are unaware they are copies and ones who know better. Very hard to tell from the pictures.

A note on Newfoundland Regt badges. When Newfoundland Confederation took place in 1949, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment became part of the Canadian army. Insignia was submitted for approval and authorized. The collar badge of the new regiment was in some cases flat backed and lugged. Some were the same size as the earlier badge.

Bit late but I’ve only just seen this thread.

destination9999 is still regularly at it selling fake Newfoundland badges.

The reason these badges look fairly convincing at a glance is because he’s definitely used an original badge and the lost wax technique to produce his copies. Note the poor reverse definition and also how many of the letters messily merge into the scroll borders, especially the W, O and D and thick rounded edges to the badge.

Additionally he’s fallen down using modern footed loops.

The iridescence sheen on the back around the beasts head is where he’s then used chemicals to artificially age the badge to that bronzed / dark colour.

Overall the quality of the casting is better than most cast fakes but fortunately still doesn’t come close to the quality of originals.

Thanks Luke. Also to note is the lack of "crispness" on the badge. The patina is really odd, looking more like a dug badge.
