2 AIF Engineer colour patch perhaps
1 Attachment(s)
This colour patch was given to me whilst in the UK, and I haven't identified it. I don't have access to Glyde etc., so perhaps someone can help identify it for me.
Thanks, Stephen. |
Without the grey 2 AIF border it would be RAE L of C Units ((GRO 694/42 refers)

as per Keith's book without the grey backing I think its patch 639. non divisional units of the RAE 1940-42 including workshop companies. im sure we will hear from Keith bc |
The grey border is perfectly fine for this patch. A lot of grey-backed examples of the patch exist (I've had a bunch of them), suggesting that there was a considerable number of AIF personnel who wore it.

Mike -- is this the publication you're referring to? (As an aside, note the spelling 'color'. There was a move in late 19th/early 20th century Australia to adopt '-or' instead of '-our'. A key example is the Australian 'Labor' Party and not 'Labour' Party. In my home state is the town of Victor Harbor. These are carry-overs from that movement.)

No - it's a 36 page (each page 11.5 in square) document of line drawings of 788 colour patches, page 1 being "NEW SERVICE COLOUR PATCHES" listing 36 of these plus four BCOF patches. Pages 24 - 36 cover Armoured formations. Does that ring any bells? Mike

Ah yes -- voila! I have a copy in my files, sent to me by a generous contact in Sydney who was doing some extensive research into AIF patches.
|
That's it! Did you know Dave Allan did a (very) limited edition coloured in his own fair hand (he was an amazing calligrapher). Mike
|
Unfortunately I didn't know Dave Allan, and I don't recall coming across his hand-coloured version. It would be interesting to see.

I also have a copy of "Colour Patch Register' 1915-1949,
Department of Defence (Army Office) Canberra Act, 30 July 1993. issued by P.M. Jeffery Major General, Assistant Chief of the General Staff- materiel John |
The Colour Patch Register was compiled by Colonel David Chinn, a well-respected figure in the field of Australian medals and insignia.
