"Bronzed" Badges
 

Hi

I have some "bronzed" die pressed badges in my collection. I know that some brass badges take on a bronze appearance with age, however my bronzed badges have a definite bronze appearance on the front but when viewed from the back, are clearly made of brass.

I am hoping that someone in the forum may be able to help me as to the origin of these bronzed badges, which are also occasionally advertised by reputable dealers. Were they officer's badges or were they worn by ORs as well. Also when and why were they produced instead of the normal bronze badges - just a cheaper version?

Probably best list the ones you have to check if they actually supplied with a bronze finish. Many yeomanry were.

The fixings are also a tell-tale.

These J R Gaunt late Jennens collars are pressed badges with a bronze finish.... you can clearly see the brass underneath :) Looks like somebody painted the top surface with a black paint....however the bronze finish is clear on the back of the collar.

I went out looking for badges today and saw amongst a tray of mixed badges an Essex Regt cap badge which was struck with blades and a bronze finish.

I do have a specimen amongst my odds and ends so I left it for someone else.
