Its hard to tell on these Dominique, I am certainly no expert as I normally don't collect them but I do have a 1WW period whistle & another inter-war\2WW period example that came with the rating's medals. I don't have photos of them but I could tak a couple & post if you wish.

I think the lower example you have posted is a later, perhaps interwar\2WW period pipe. The broad arrow is seen on some examples. I think one of mine has it stamped on also, I have been told this arrow is an indication of a earlier (2WW & prior) period pipe.

The shiny nickel plated pipes are from the modern (post 1950's) period.

PS: they were referred to as PIPES - not whistles.

Pipes are made with a bosun's call.

Absolutely hence: Piping the side or pipe down, pipes announcing orders...STILL...CARRY ON or pipes just taking the proverbial....

Old Ark Royal ( Captain Ray Lygo.)

The bosun's mate was asked to pipe for Lt/Cdr Gash. Which he did.
Lt/Cdr Gash appears on the bridge and rips into the bosun's mate.
"My name is Lt/Cdr Gash pronounced GAYSH. Do you understand".
Bosun's mate apologises profusely.

2hrs later. Fall out from flying stations. Bosun's mate told to pipe gash may now be ditched.

"Do you hear there. GAYSH may now be ditched"

5 days No9's I believe.

Story passed from ship to ship.

Close, I believe Gash was a RN officer, I joined Ark in 1973:(.

"Pipe down" refers to lights out and get to sleep ready for the next day, i.e. no smoking after lights out.

"Out pipes" is "smoke easy" is over, carry on with your work.

Was a77-78 man just prior to decommissioning under Capt Anson and before perishers at Dolphin........Good times:confused:

Dominique.. No Expert on calls other than the hear and obey kind but I would hazard a guess...post war... there being no obvious date hallmarks and models look fairly contemporary.

Nice models by the way, I carry a brass model worn on a watch albert with 2b mess undress to embarrass the wife:p

Hello Dominique.
Apologies for being slow in getting photos of my Bosun's pipes/calls posted.

The first I have posted photos of belonged to a career RN rating who was Warranted as a Gunner RN & later retired as a Commissioned Gunner RN. He served in the RN from 1895 to 1922.

When I obtained his medal group there were several other items that came with the group including his Boson's pipe. Fortunately he had his name & ship scratched into the keel of the pipe, Now the lettering has quite faded over the years likely due to polishing & repairs made to the pipe over time, but it says:

"A.H. Bailey, Hotspur". Bailey served on HMS Hotspur from Feb 1901 to March '04, thus dating the pipe from that time frame.
His original chain also came with the pipe & it is quite long.
