This type of know signifies Staffordshire. If you do a search (Search/Advanced its in the green bar next to New Posts) for this name or 'Staffs', there are a few posts which may include this badge.

It appears to be a "Shako-Badge"..... c1860. K&K show the same pattern for Volunteer Rifle Corps

Yorkshire = "36" in the centre
Robin Hood = "RHR" in the centre
Northamptonshire = 1NRV in the centre

so this is possbly a Staffordshire?

I am 99% sure that this badge was illustrated in an old article on badges of the Staffords in the MHS Bulletin many years ago. ( I think the article was called the" Staffords and the Stafford Knot"or something similar )

I have had a search but cannot find it immediately, I will continue searching and will post the result if and when I find the article.

P.B.

The article I was thinking about was in the Bulletin of May1971 and the badge is not illustrated, neither is it in the "The Staffords 1881-1978" by Rosignoli and Whitehouse.

I think Peter 616 is right.

P.B.

( Does anyone have copies of Dave Coopers books, I am sure it will be in them )

Thanks Peter,

I have know Dave for a long time ( not as long perhaps as I have known you ) and I really ought to buy copies of his books. You cannot have enough reference books. Will buy them at the next opportunity.

Peter is correct, it is the 1st Admin Battalion Staffordshire Rifle Volunteers.
It appears in Dave Coopers books "The Staffordshire Regiments Vol 1 & 2 pages 11 and18 respectively
However this badge has been faked to death... and I attach what I believe to be the genuine article for comparison

This badge is GENUINE one,It is for sale but i do not know what price to ask for it. The buyer can always return it if not happy with it.Frank

Peter Brydon 29-06-10 03:24 PM

Nice to see that as the badge is for sale Frank is offering a money back guarantee.

Can I please just make it clear that when I said " this badge was illustated in an old article on badges...." what I was in fact saying was" an example of this design of badge" was illustrated.......

I was not passing an opinion on the authenticity of this example of the badge.

P.B.
