Yorkshire Volunteers Badge

Hi Chris and Jerry

Just a bit of info on the York Vol badge blackened, this badge is a figment of a well known dealers imagination who served in 3 Yorks with me. He got a batch of the cap badges and first lot he blackened the whole lot he then blackened just the rose and the last he blackened just the scroll.
He also had made various bullion cap badges to the Yorkshire Vols with different coloured backings, which were totally rejected by the unit in the mid 1970s.
Hope this clarifies why you see the blackened badges.

Peter- ex D Company 3 Yorks...lol

Hi Peter,

From researching the manufacturing process I noted that the black paint was used in the two dye colouring procees for multi-coloured or as officially known, two-toned badges. This process in the colour dye process of anodised cap badges is known as 'Stopping Off' and the black paint is used as a masking agent to prevent the second colour over 'writing' the first.

The badge is colour dyed with the first colour and then those areas that are to remain the that colour are masked off with black paint or in some cases wax. The badge is then re-coloured and the areas previously dyed and not masked off are re-dyed by the second dye colouring process. The black paint is then removed revealing the original colour beneath it and you have a two-tone badge.

Some dealers are selling these unfinished badges as rare variants and no doubt a few others are amending others with a view to deceive collectors but don't worry as I'll expose any dodgy dealer and badge as and when I have proof.

Regards

Chris
