Army Medical Corps titles

I have often wondered just when the Medical Corps changed its different patterns of titles, maybe someone can help.
1. when was the MSC title first introduced? The Medical Staff Corps replaced the former 'Army Medical Department' but when? 2. did the large AMC title in the scan then replace MSC in Britain, and if so, when? It replaced MSC in NSW from 1898. 3. when was the smaller AMC title worn? Is it British? 4. when was the common RAMC first used? Thanks |
I believe this whole subject was dealt with in previous posts on this forum a few years ago. Try searching for Army Medical corps.
The items you show are: 1. Australian Army Medical Corps - This was never British as there was no AMC in Britain 2. Pakistan Army Medical Corps - Post 1947 3. Royal Army Medical Corps (British) - worn 1898 to c.1939 The Medical Staff Corps did not replace Army Medical Department, they ran concurrent, MSC for medically trained soldiers and AMD for Officers. There was also a Medical Staff (also an Officer Unit). They all amalgamated in 1898 to form Royal Army Medical Corps. |
Many thanks for your helpful comments. Just one other point; why did they use the term "Army Medical Service" on wartime arm bands?
|
Yes I have seen that on the red cross arm bands worn during WWI by RAMC, Red cross, Nurses, etc. They all seen to be stamped with 'Army Medical Service'.
Sorry I don't have a definitive answer for you. |

I believe the requirement to authenticate "Red Cross" armbands by applying a stamp comes from the Geneva Convention. It is possible that the simplified wording of "Army Medical Service" was specified in the original document and is still used.
Here is a brassard from the 1990s - 2000s used in Bosnia. Tim |

Here is an extract from the current Regulations for the use of the Emblem which (still) uses the term "Army Medical Service".
