Marine collar badge
 

I recently acquired a royal marine collar which appears to be quite strange. It firstly is quite small compared to a normal badge, and, secondly the globe is held in position by a scalloped back plate which means it would always be on show rather than being hidden by whatever material it would have been attached to. Also the question arises as the the need of the scallop, did something sit above the badge. I look forward to your comments.

I suppose it's possible that the smaller scalloped Royal Marines Officer collar previously had either a left or right facing bugle horn above making it a RMLI Officers Mess Dress collar, modified after the amalgamation of the RMLI and RMA in 1923.

I'm sure this is right, can you just make out traces of excess metal at the tips of the laurels that show were the budge was cut off?

Please excuse my ignorance - but is it not a mess collar missing its black felt? I take your point about a potential missing bugle though and of course if you have it in your hand you will see more than the viewer of an image.
