Hi Mike, well the writing seems to be Dutch but I'm leaning to Boer/Dutch, but you probably already suspect that, right:confused:

Anyway Cheers!

Greg

Oh and Mike the pics are bad. Time to dust off your Kodak box camera and take some better pics! To the rest of the forum - I know Mike well so he doesn't mind when I bug him.....right Mike?????

I have had the one top left since the 1970s, when I got it for 20p as "unknown".

It is from one of the Boer Republics from the time of the Second Boer War. IIRC it was worn by Transvaal Artillery.

Although the Boer Commandos wore mostly civilian clothes their artillery wore uniform. I think that in "With the Flag to Pretoria" there is a photo of the badge I have being worn on a slouch hat by Boer troops.

My eyes are not up to reading the motto on your badge, but mine has the South African "Union is Strength" motto, but in Dutch.

I have just scanned my badge. The motto is: "Eendragt Maakt Magt"

For what it's worth here is a poor scan of the back. Two loops E & W.

For many years I have been intending to frame this with the Imperial Yeomanry badge and rosette that I have. One day...

Just purchased a large bag full of Canadian and South African Cap, Collar and Shoulder badges..... Some I intend to keep of course and some pass on.....

Will try those pictures again.......

Guys

These are very desirable badges......and pricey! 20p an absolute bargain, one can now expect to pay around 15-20+ pounds for the small ones.

The Orange Free State badges are a lot scarcer, they had a smaller artillery section than the Transvaal Staats Artillery.

I do believe that some were also worn by the uniformed Boer Republic civil servants such as post office workers etc (unable to verify this)

A failing with them is that often the little spikes on the standards tended to get broken off and very few are complete, complete ones would possibly cost a few bob more.

Thought you might like to see this photo. It shows the badge at bottom right on an Artillerie-Korps van die Oranje Vrystaat pouch. I bought this back in 1989.

Very nice badges, I bet Chris B. from Germany would want to take a look at them and possibly buy them as he collects Boer badges and medals.

Hi QSAMIKE,

I can confirm that they are all SA Boer Republic Badges. The flag staffs on the left hand Free State badge are missing. It looks as if the top right Transvaal badge is white metal, in this case it would be Owen 2004. There were some variations on the Boer Republic badges.

Have fun.

Regards

Andrew
