Rifle Brigade WW1 era and WW2 era

Hi Guys,

Here are two Rifle Brigade badges for both World Wars. Does anyone have any idea what might have caused the black stain on the first badge and possibly how to remove it without damaging the badge? Grateful for any comments on the originality of these badges. THANKS!

Just from the photographs I would think you are okay with those, the first appears to have actually been worn.
