Armoured Car
 

I have an armoured car badge similar in the shape to the Lanchester RNAS collar badge, but larger, size being 5cm x 2.5cm bottom of the wheel to the top of the turret. Also there are no "rivets". Any ideas

I'd say the details have been polished down as some remaining can still be seen.

Yes I agree that some detail still exists, two roundals, but this appears to be too large, and heavy, to be a collar badge also the design is slightly different to the RNAS Lanchester.

My first thought was that it's an armoured car crewman's arm badge.

Possibly, but not RNAS as far as I know. Ratings wore an oval collar badge with a Talbot armoured car to the centre, whilst the officer's wore either a Talbot car or a Lanchester car or thier collar, the Lanchest being a slightly different design to the one shown. I have the Talbot rating's and Talbot officer's badges.

Perhaps I can add a little more to this thread.

I have owned the attached photo for many years as its inclusion in Edwards and Langley's Proficiency Badges book shows!

The arm badge being worn by a member of the Royal Tank Corps is clearly an armoured car which appears similar to that shown. In addition the late Jim McDonald, chronicler of anything Tanks had the badge illustrated which is identical to that shown.

All of which suggests its use at some point by RTC Armoured car crews or units.

Hi Jon, the T.C. arm badge is the type usually associated with the RAF regiments in the M.E. ,the front wheel projects beyond the engine compartment. It is however good to see a clear print of it, thank you. The 5th A.C.C. were in Shanghai in 1927 and may have adopted the arm badge as well as I've seen a a photo of an 11th Hussar wearing it, but I can't remember where I saw it, but it was shortly after conversion to armoured cars in the M.E. The 5th A.C.C had returned to the M.E. to assist in their conversion and I think form one of their squadrons, again I can't find my source. I hope this has thoroughly muddied the waters, best wishes Mike
