Army Flying Badge - bullion lion & crown (KC)
 

This is my latest acquisition, just arrived in the post...

Clearly, it is the later - smaller - version of the Army Flying Badge.

Something I am noticing now that I have the wings in my hands, is that the bullion lion and crown were evidently sewn on top of an existing set of fully embroidered wings. It has been really well done. Including the backing plate, it is quite a construction!

To my eyes, looks good, but would welcome any further insights or opinions.

I haven't any info. to add, just a query - wasn't this badge or an identical one shown on the forum a few days ago?
(I've done a quick forum Search but can't find the thread).

I think images were shown with the suggestion that the central part of the design was a staff officers badge?

The backing plate was allegedly a piece of aircraft fuselage.
(I've probably got it around my neck and saw it on eBay or a dealers site).

Thanks, I thought it was eBay and the seller was st.ives but didn't want to start throwing sellers IDs around if not.

It is the one Luc posted about in the thread he has linked , and eBay description stated :

"A Genuine WWII Army Pilots Wing Mounted On Aircraft Fuselage.

Bullion embroidered and mounted on a piece of fuselage with an added pin fixing.

Fuselage has original paint which is a blue colour."

£110.88 would be cheap for a genuine WW2 bullion wing!

I believe Doug's wing is made from the type shown in the attachment.

Strange, I followed that link and got a different thread.
I retire in and having caused confusion.

This is really frustrating :(

..as stated before wing is Not wartime as it is the wrong size.It is attempting to copy the full size cloth, and bullion examples of WW2.

Regarding the size of the wings, I do know that the smaller version of the Army Flying Badge was already in use by March 1946. I have photographic of this and an example of a set of wings from at least one glider pilot who was already demobbed in March 1946.

I was also advised that the subject of the smaller wings is covered in 'Badges on Battledress' and that it is indicated as being introduced in mid-1944, at the same time as the 2nd pilot's wing. However, I do not (yet) have that book, so would rely on those who do to confirm this?

According to 'Badges on Battledress' it was sealed in June 1944; a pattern card is held at the IWM.
