British Aviation Mission to Japan

Hello Everyone,

I am looking for references or photos of the uniform and insignia worn by members of the 1921 British Aviation Mission (attached to) The Imperial Japanese Naval Air Service.

It was sometimes referred to as the Sempill Mission after Captain William Forbes-Sempill who lead the mission.

Many thanks in anticipation.

I believe this book may include a couple a few photos: BRACKLES MEMOIRS OF A PIONEER OF CIVIL AVIATION.

Hello “mjw”,

I’ve looked through the book you mention about H G Brackley who was a member of the British Aviation Mission, there’s a limited number of photos of that part of his life.

I’m keen to track down high definition / clear photos, or details of the uniforms development and authorisation.

Many thanks

Many thanks for posting the photos Steve. Can’t say I’ve seen one of those previously.

I know same here, this is the only example I have seen since acquiring it about twenty odd years ago.
Best wishes
Steve

What’s really intriguing is the outer writing is in traditional “Chinese”, which is very similar to Japanese and translates as Japan Flying School. Still trying to work out the characters in the middle of the reverse.
