Stanlow Island - River Mersey/Manchester Ship Canal

I came across an interesting article earlier about Stanlow Island off Ellesmere Port on the Mersey at the north end entrance of the Manchester Ship Canal
Attached is an image of the Ferry Boat Captain who would transport crews to the refinery and wherever else they wanted as well as the occupants of the 4 police houses on the island (now derelict)
The captains badge looks like an adapted part of a military badge with an added overlay
Also Pictured is the Manchester Ship Canal Police Seargent who’s helmet insignia is unfortunately side on

Very interesting, but I think the South African section is the wrong section for this topic :D

I dare say that there might be a South African connect somewhere, but, it certainly does not jump out at me!
