Help on this cap badge please for a friend.........no info at all apart from WW1.

Definitely a VTC.

WW1 Volunteer Training Corps. Think of the Home Guard but raised locally rather than by the War Dept. They wore their own uniforms in 1915-16 before adopting standard khaki when they became Volunteer Battalions (not be to confused with pre 1908 VBs) of the local Infantry regiments. Your man is wearing a VTC style jacket (they had several styles) and cap badge .

VTC cap badge designs are not recorded that well and there are lots of unknowns. There are some excellent albums on the Forum which may help.

Despite a few issues in Ireland with arming the locals there was an Irish Association of VTCs. See this article from 1916:

Full photo......the man was 45 years old at beginning of WW1...so too old for forces.

As others have said, VTC, though cap badge is not one I immediately recognise - perhaps Tim 'TWGB' can help out there.

Our man is a 'Section Commander' as denoted by the two parallel bands on his cuff.

Red brassard bearing the black letters 'GR' (Georgius Rex), worn by VTC units, though not particularly popular by all accounts.

The armlet and cuff rank badges clinch it as Volunteer Training Corps but I'm not up on their cap badges.

As there appears to be crossed rifles within the oval, to my eyes anyway, I would go for the Athletes Volunteer Force.

I thought that too as it's the closest match in TWGB's album

SK et al,

Well, apart from agreeing absolutely that he is VTC (GR Armband) and that he is also a Section Commander (Ranking as Seargeant; two cuff bands), the badge itself has me stumped.

It probably is crossed rifles, and the ring (?) around the outside probably has a name, but it is bigger that the typical enameled AVF badges, and I think probably too rare to be a headdress type badge that goes with the mufti equivalent.

The "general pattern" VTC badge was also crossed rifles, so the theme continues, but that again is a smaller badge than this.

As suggested, if there is any detail of the photographer that might help. I'd be very pleased to find out the answer, too.
