Nursing Pin???

Gentlemen, This looks to be a South African Nursing pin, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know, or have any thoughts?

South African Women’s Auxiliary Services (Suid Afrikanse Vroue Hulp Dienste) - a voluntary organization that set up leisure and social activities and aided in conscription campaigns. It comprised up to 65 000 women.

Thank you Mike! That is a thorough and complete answer, and the link is excellent. The "NS" in the pin made me wonder if it was nursing related.

Not sure about the 'N.S' and 'N.D' (English/Afrikaans ?) , perhaps one of our South African members may know.

NS - National Service (ND - Nationale Diens)

The SAWAS was originally formed from an organization started in 1939 called the South African Womans National Service Legion, hence the NS in the badge.

I always thought this was the SA Nursing badge.
