Surrey HG Norwegian Contingent

Just sharing some interesting HG Unit Insignia with you guys.
This is an interesting group to a Surrey based Norwegian sub-unit during WWII.
I have included the description text that came with them. I like them because it is a nice, fairly complete group - they may also have been worn with HG shoulder titles etc, but I am not sure which type. They are ex-Grace Gibson and thanks are due to Rod Flood for getting hold of them for me.
I have been trying to locate any other information about them from old copies of the MHS Journal, but so far, no luck. If anyone else has any info, please let me know.
The other pictures are of a sealed pattern card to a printed 'Stretcher Bearer' printed badge along with its 1942 card - including the durability standards if it is washed..... Enjoy.

Fascinating stuff.

There is an interesting article by Charles Thomas on " Cloth Insignia of the LDV and Home Guard 1940-45" in the MHS Bulletins in 1968 and although a couple of Surrey units are mentioned, this one is not.

Norwegian flag insignia

This Norwegian flag insignia was also worn I believe by Norwegians who accompanied the first Commando raids on their homeland. Presumably they acted as guides and interpreters. I think there is some film of them somewhere, maybe other members will know of it.

For your info. I showed these to Frank Stevens when I was over in the UK recently and also sent him a HiRes picture when I got back. He hadn't seen the before either. He was after the source of the descriptive comments. I assume that these came from the GC auction catalog - which I don't have. David

David,

Not sure if I understand the query corectly.

The descriptive comments which were on one of the thumbnails in your original post are not from the Grace Gibson Bonhams catalogue , I have checked in my copy .

Hope this helps.

Peter

Thanks for that. Frank has asked me where it came from. He is under the impression that he has seen it somewhere before in a previous published work.... Can you let me know which auction house covered her collection as I would like to get a copy. Thanks, david

The auctioneers for the Grace Gibson collection were Bonhams.

I wonder if the source of the detail on the Norwegian unit might have been one of Jon Mills books ?

Peter,
As Frank seemed to be quite knowledgeable about HG items etc, I assume that he probably has a number of references - certainly more on than I have.
You could be right. I will send him a letter - he won't use email etc and let him know.
Thanks for the info. David

An interesting collection of badges.

Some information on the Norwegian unit is contained in my book ['In the Space of a Single Day - The Uniforms and Insignia of the Home Guard 1940 to 1944 and 1952-1956' [/I]Available as a reprint from MLRS Publishers. See their website

The Stretcher Bearer title is included in the book as it is often identified as an HG item but is not. It was worn on a brown boiler suit by hospital stretcher bearers working as part of the wartime Emergency Medical Service.

Jon Mills (Postwarden)

Postwarden,
Welcome to the Forum, I am sure you will be able to add a lot of knowledge.
