Here are my bits for the 9th London. The photo on the left shows (I think) a pugaree flash in regimental colours, three cord boss badges, and a cloth shoulder title. I cannot find any mention of the black boss badge in any book. The second photo shows the other ranks badge with original red backing, and (I think) the slouch hat rosette and two variations of shoulder title. All the best Sean.

Nice collection, especially the cord bosses which I think are the badges that Churchill has (incorrectly?) down as collars in his book. Attached my black cord boss (which has a pretty hard to read Gaunt tablet on the rear) and a normal forage cap. The latter came in two sizes with a few millimeters difference between them and copies exist as usual but can be spotted by a flaw on the right hand cross arm and a gouge across the U of South. Also the lowest void hasn't been cut out.

THE LONDON REGIMENT - 9th Bn C.O.L (Queen Victoria's Rifles) - Advice Needed Please

Hi Chaps,

Has anyone got a genuine 9th Bn C.O.L cap badge they could post a picture of for me to have a butchers at? I've been offered one recently that has two voidings in the central device is that correct? However its not actually blacked which I find a bit curious can anyone please give me some guidance to this and other blacked London regiment badges?

Thanks to all :) ,

Luke

Luke,

The 9th London badge came in two sizes about 5mm difference between them. The smaller one has two voids and the larger a third with one under the horses belly. If it's a large one you're looking at and being un-blackened I suspect it is, then there are a couple of things other than the voids to look out for. The right hand cross arm has a die flaw and there is another, a sort of line crossing the U in South Africa making it appear uneven. I've seen this one all brass and whitemetal copies.

Attached both large (left) and small (right). You can gague the size difference by the honour tablet.

Cheers for that Keith, that's very handy info... so going on what you're saying the one I've been offered sounds like a restrike would you say? (pics below).

Thanks again,

Luke

Hard to see the flaws I mentioned but it does look very similar in appearance to the couple of copies I mentioned and if I were offered it I'd give it a miss. The good thing is it's not a particularly rare badge to get hold of.

Any particular badge of the London Regiment you wanted info on as they're my main collecting subject.

Thanks Keith your knowledge would be much appreciated as I have been having some trouble with the blacked badges from C.O.L Bns. If you dont mind I could send you a larger better quality picture of the badge as I'm limited to 19.5Kb on the forum, would need your email address via personal message on the forum.

Thanks a million :D

Luke

I agree with keith - the voiding looks badly done and the reverse is poorly stamped.
