What are the overall dimensions of the cap badge and the collars for the CEF PPCLI badges?

Bill,

The cap badge was worn as collars as well! The officers wore the same badge as the OR's . There was no difference between the to! I can give you dimensions when I get home!

Hi Rob, Thanks. I was aware that the cap and collars were used interchangeably, but I would like the dimensions for my notes.

The measurements are H 42.14mm W 28.08mm

Hi Rob, I have seen collars that are smaller than the cap. If you have a copy of Stewart's OVERSEAS The Lineage and Insignia of the Canadian Expeditionary Force 1914-1918, there is an example of the "smaller" collar on plate 22. The collar shown is non-voided, and only slightly smaller than the cap, but there is a definite difference in size. Charlton's Standard Catalogue of First World War Canadian Infantry Badges also shows a collar of smaller size. Both the examples in Stewart's and Cross's are smaller versions of the standard marguerite pattern badge.
Do you have those? And the measurements for them? Thanks.

I can't say for sure!

But I would almost bet the farm that the collars are a custom job!

The officers wore the same badges the during the CEF period! There was to be no distinguishing between the ranks and the commissioned ranks. Any deviation from this would have probably be frowned upon!

I have also learned over the years that Charlton is not the B and end all for reference . I have Stewarts Lineage book

Case in point plate 24 Yukon Motor MG Bty is the incorrect badge.

Sorry I can't help to resolve one of the many mysteries of the CEF.

Thanks Rob. I saw a set of collars that a fellow brought into the Ottawa show last fall. They were distinctly smaller than the measurements that are posted. I am beginning to wonder if they may have been officer's sd?
I will keep digging. Like you say, CEF badges are full of mysteries.

There are most certainly collars which were issued to officers. I have a non voided example and have seen the voided types too. They are very scarce to get a hold of. There are pin back variants and others with lugs. Typically they are not hallmarked but I have seen a matched set marked BIRKS.

Dimensions are: 35mm high by 25mm wide.

Please see cap and collars to the PPCLI. The smaller badges are the collars of course. A pin back example and a matched pair of BIRKS marked collars with lugs.

It is certainly possible that smaller variants exist and if anyone on this forum has a picture of them, it would be great to see them. I know if you go to the Musuem of the Regts in Calgary, they have a tunic (full uniform on a mannequin) which is wearing marguerite collars which are considerably smaller. However, if you look closely, they are actually modern copies and I think are a kitshop item. At first glance they fooled me! Anyhow, something to be aware of.
