245th or Grenadier Guards?
 

To help me both understand and make the book project a more valid reference, I need some help.

First the question of whether a cap badge is 245thA or whether it is Canadian Grenadier Guards post WW1 cap badge. Is there a way to tell the difference, for example number of flames or shape of the flames?

The collars in brass with the brass overlay, were they used after WW1 or not? It is odd to put a brass overlay on a brass badge I would say.

Don, the CGG badge that is imaged is the post war type. The post war badges used a different brass planchet.

Hi Don, I don't like the collars. Again, the brass used to make them is not the type used to stamp First WW badges. They are far too bright for the time period. And, like you say, why a brass overlay on brass?

Interesting to note that the 245A or 245B in Charltons list the OR's grenade cap as pickled brass with brass overlay. Maybe that gave them the opportunity to use up the grenade caps that had no cypher on them, or perhaps to use the same dies and just make and add the cypher. I don't think that I have ever seen that construction.

Hi Don, I had my officers 245 CEF stuff handy so I took a quick pic. At least in the case of the officers issue it appears that they welded a 245 over the 87th CEF collar.

Great picture of great badges. Now I can say that I have actually seen one with an overlay on the grenade of the cap. It is also interesting how they did up the collars. So in that picture I see the cap badge displayed on page 384 of Charltons with the collars displayed on page 383 of Charltons. This photo gives me something to aim for.
