Somerset Light Infantry help needed

I wonder if I could ask the forum for help? A friend of mine who knows my interest in military insignia has asked whether I could source her Grandfathers medals for him ( he's 93 and the medals were lost many years ago) they would like to present the replacements to him at Christmas without alerting him to what they are doing. His name is Albert Lee of the Somerset Light Infantry and he served during Ww2 including being in the second day of the Normandy landings. I'm not a medal guy but would be fairly confident of sourcing campaign medals and his cap badge. Could someone tell me what he was entitled to? Many thanks in anticipation. Tim

Hope this helps- you are going to need some further details to be sure of entitlement. Regards, Paul. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/medals-c...nd-eligibility

If that was the only campaign in which he served, it'd be 39-45 Star, France & Germany Star, Defence Medal & War Medal. You can get copy medals from Dixon's though you could probably get originals online for a similar price.

Many thanks guys, that MOD medal site is excellent and we've now realised he's entitled to the Legion d'Honneur from the French Govt who wanted to award it to any surviving veterans to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the D Day landings - if it hadn't been for that web site we'd have never have known ! So it should be a special Christmas for him!

One question what would be the order of precedence for mounting the medals?

I think WWI and WWII medals are listed in order. It might be worth contacting his local Royal British Legion to see if they can give any help/advice. Regards, Paul.

If you want a L d' H don't wait for the authorisation via MOD & French Embassy - my father's application went in 2 1/2 years ago, still no response of any kind to any enquiries we've made (his local MP's been requested to assist so hopefully we may get a positive result).
Looks like they turn up on eBay at around £100.

Merde! Hope we have better luck!

I think MOD haven't issued replacement WWII stars & medals for some years now, advising that you buy them, I'd just go out & buy the ones that have been suggested & any "paperwork" can follow.
Even after its authorised you'll have to buy the L d'H, the awards themselves aren't actually given.

I saw a news article on Face Book last Week with a senior Officer presenting a veteran with his WW2 Medals so still obviously do it for some.
