PTF MFG - On War Service Badge

1 Attachment(s)
Hi All,

Sorry to repeat this but I put it in the lapel badge category and am wondering if it's been missed in there.

ADMIN please delete one if it's in the wrong place.

I picked up a badge like this badge on Sunday because of the "on war service" element but I'm wondering if anyone tell me what I have?

Who is PTF manufacturing and would this be WW1 or WW2?

If it's any help the dealer was based in Doncaster so I'm assuming it will be from that sort of area but I can't find anything on google.

Thanks a lot,

Michael

I am sorry I cannot help but I wonder if the "P" in "PTF" may stand for Paschal in view of centre device ?

Your badge is undoubtedly of WW2 vintage and appears in my book Doing Their Bit; Home Front Lapel Badges 1939-1945 as illustration D14 in the chapter which explains the purpose of On War Service and National Service Badges.

Sadly like many such wartime badges it has not so far been possible to decipher the meaning of PTF although MFG clearly stands for Manufacturing.

No such firm appears on the Graces Guide website
http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Main_Page which is a useful tool for tracking down defunct British companies.

I'd be delighted if someone could identify this firm.

Thanks for the replies,

Peter, if my googling skills are correct you are referring to the Paschal Lamb? Are you thinking it may be church related?

Jon, I haven't seen that website before, that will help me with some other things I'm looking at as well.

Thanks again,

Michael

Michael,

No I was not thinking Church related but the Paschal Lamb presumably has some sort of connection with the company, perhaps in the company`s name ?

I wonder if there is a link to Preston (Lancs), given that the city's arms bear almost an identical paschal lamb to the one depicted on Shiny's badge?

Perhaps the 'P' is for 'Preston'. Some or other munitions factory, tool factory, foundry...?

Shiny 01-03-16 11:45 PM

I like that theory about the city arms, it is almost identical and the P fits as well.

Solved

Hi All,

I followed the theory that Jelly Terror suggested saying that the coat of arms related to Preston and emailed the Preston Historical Society.

After a few emails back and forward I've had a reply back saying they believe the badge is from the Preston Tyre Fabric Manufacturing Company Limited.

It was founded in 1920 and based at Croft Street Mills. In 1937 they had acquired Higher Walton Mill and had moved there by 1939. The last reference she could find for them was at Higher Walton was in 1972.

They seem to be involved in tyres (obviously) and hoses in vehicle engines, but with the correct name the company can be found on a google search.

Hope that helps everyone.

Michael,

Brilliant bit of research. Well done. I can now annotate it correctly in my lapel badge book.

Glad to have been of help, but JT and the Preston Historical Society did it all really.

Hello Michael

Not that you need any confirmation of a link to Preston but this button for Preston Corporation has just appeared on ebay - with the Paschal lamb!

A few days ago it might have helped answer the query! Oh well, better late than never!

Thanks Roger,

I think it helps confirm things.

Had to post this... an old pub sign I came across at an antiques shop yesterday. Thought it might be of interest:

Posted a longish reply yesterday but it didn't survive the forum resurrection.

So, here is the short version.

Saw badge , impulse buy as 'possibly' WW1.

A bit of digging/lucky guess found mention on Grace's Guide.

Grace's Guide

Bit more digging:

"'Moons Mill’: Higher Walton Mill

The complex was sold to the Lancashire Cotton Corporation in 1932 and taken over by the Preston Tyre Fabric Co in 1937. The mill closed in 1967-8."

Lion on top of badge - Something to do with British Industries Fair ? Award ?

After all that I found this thread , could have saved time and effort by simply asking forum but where is the fun in that .:D
