24th Grey's Horse symbolism

It was recently pointed out that the motif on the 24th Grey's Horse cap badge includes the Ukrainian golden trident.
Does anyone know the significance of the symbol on this Canadian pre-1914 badge?

So , rather than a Ukrainian connection it may simply be a religious symbol ?

Mike, that crossed my mind. I am not sure there is any connection between the Ukrainian use and the Canadian militia.
Your research with the connection to Earl Grey is more logical.

I have often wondered about this. Even when I was a kid in 1960s Saskatchewan, Ukrainian-Canadians faced a lot of smug prejudicial attitudes and 'jokes'. Their acceptance into military circles was probably extremely limited prior to the FWW (and of course, many were interned as 'Enemy Aliens').

The device on the 24th badge certainly bears strong resemblance to the trident; and that is a very unusual lion for a British Empire (Commonwealth) badge.
