Souvenir tartan identification?
 

In 1998 I purchased this souvenir tartan. I believe it was put together by a collector not a soldier, but a long time ago. Haphazardly I have tried to identify the tartan with no success. Can anyone identify the tartan?

Mike,
"Black Watch" tartan was worn from the early 1700's. The Royal Highland Regiment was supposedly named The Black Watch because of the dark government tartan.
I should add that most of the badges date from around the First World War.

Worn in slightly different shades by other regiments (A&SH a slightly lighter shade?) and is it now the tartan worn by the Royal Regiment of Scotland?

Must’ve got damp at some point in time as that Royal Irish Regiment looks covered in active verdigris. If it was mine I’d be trying to remedy that (and any others affected) before it ends up irreparably stained or even worse pitted.

Tinto, I think that all of the badges could have been worn during the First World War.
Some could have been worn later but could have been worn during WW I. I don’t think there are any that were produced exclusively after WW I. However, I don’t think one could determine when it was put together.. Is this true?
Could this tartan have been used during the WW I period?

Hi Mike,
Hard to answer all your questions. However, It's possible that the badges/buttons were gathered by an Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders man as there is a solid A&SH badge with tartan backing as well as a later voided A&SH badge. Just an idea.
