Royal Navy Parachute Wing

Hi guys
would like to know when this would of been used. The only info I have is Oliver Locks book which he mentions worn on temperate uniform and has an image with individual (Camo Jacket)who served in 148 Cdo Battery 1965 and then used the same camo with wing in the Falklands. The wings shown in the book have fully embroidered feathers(?) Note split feathers and embroidered on dark blue felt. Would any one have dates on wear and is it still used today? cheers Phill |
Certainly still being worn on RM Blues NO. 3's in 1963 ... then we changed over to Lovat uniforms April '64, the No 3 uniforms were discontinued. No idea when these wings were introduced though.

Much appreciated Sunray 9
Good to know an actual date of use from a veteran. Would anyone know when this was wing was discontinued? Was it used on the Lovat uniform and also authorized on DPM? Phill |

More questions , what does VOCAB mean and or dates of use as the links do not work. Nice wing at least the one I have is original to the time period. cheers Phill |
These wings were not worn on Lovats and I personally never saw them on DPM's.

Excellent so we have an end date 1963.
The image of the individual wearing the red wing on a Denison smock (apologies incorrectly put DPM) with the red wing must of been unauthorized. This is on page 267 Oliver Locks book British Airborne Insignia. Thanks for help guys Phill |
VOCAB is/was the Royal Navy / Royal Marines unique stores reference number. I believe now replaced by the use of NATO Stock number (NSN). Many RN/RM cloth badges are found with the VOCAB number stencilled on the back or embroidered on a tab which is cut off before the badge is sewn to clothing.
Link to VOCAB list compiled by a collector and on the RM Historical Site https://rmhistorical.com/images/Mast...cab%20List.pdf Tim |
Much appreciated Tim Thank you

The badge was also worn by RN personnel, if qualified, attached to the commando units such as medical personnel / radio operators etc. I know of one RN officer, who had been with the commandos, who wore the badge, in gold, on his uniform.

Thanks Royston

The parachute wings worn by the Royal Navy as far as I know have always been the "full" wings.
The "Lightbulb" has a different significance in the R.N., being SPAG and being worn on the right cuff as an ADQUAL badge. The full wings were worn in bullion on No1 dress and in red on No2 dress on the left cuff as a "Flying Badge". Wear of the parachutist badge was discontinued in the R.N. in the early 1980s for some reason. It was then re-introduced in the early 1990s but worn on the right shoulder to bring the R.N. into line with the other services and avoid confusion with flying badges. At present it is still worn in the R.N. so the red badge was worn right up until the abolition of the red badges. Early 2000s I think. Info can be found in DCI(RN). |
Thank you Jim
Excellent Information. Jim would you say the wing I have is pre 1980's era? The only point of difference is that it is split feathers etc where as others are "fully embroidered" chute and wings. Phill |
