East Yorks 1895-1914
 

Hi Forum,
I'm researching a WWI Officer in 5/E Yorks Cyclist Bttn attached to XIII Corps Bttn Army Cyclist Corps.
He had long service before hostilities:-
1895-1898 1st East Riding of Yorkshire Volunteer Artillery (which became 2nd Volunteer Battalion East Riding of Yorkshire Royal Garrison Artillery)
1901-1908 1st (Volunteer) Battalion East Yorks
1908-1920 5th Cyclist Battalion East Yorks

Please can the forum help me with the dates of some images. I hope the headdress and insignia will help.

If he is in picture then its whilst he was with the 1st Vol Bn at the time.

A mixture of head gear. Did the side hats come later? Any dates? What colours were they?

I imagine these are sergeants in TF? The chap at bottom right was a Colour Sergeant from 1905, but I can't see such insignia

Informal Sgts group. TF? Did Cyclist Bttn uniform change in 1908-14?

This full dress uniform is infantry and matches the East Yorks. Whilsts the style was worn up to 1914, the cuffs in the photo are 'jam-pot' style which were replaced in 1902.

Side caps were worn from the 1890s whilst the slouch hats dates post Boer War so its the early years of the C19th. The slouch hats suggest VB period rather than post 1908 TF.

The peaked cap was introduced in 1905 so it was taken after that date.

With reference to this:- "1895-1898 2nd Volunteer Battalion East Riding of Yorkshire Royal Garrison Artillery", it is not correctly described.

If he was in the local volunteer artillery unit, it was in 1895 to 1898 known as this:-

2nd East Riding of Yorkshire Volunteer Artillery (Western Division, Royal Artillery), based at Scarborough. There was also a 1st at Hull, depending on which he was in.

I'd followed that, but will now look up your reference. There's an amendment on the form, which may explain something. John Edward Brown lived in Hull.

A good picture of the 1st VB Yorkshire Regt (The Green Howards). Note the bandoliers worn by the Cyclists in the photo which are the same as the ones in yours.
