Prison Service Chief Officer Cap Badge variations

1 Attachment(s)
This may be of interest to some, 3 variations of Chief Officers Cap badges.

1. GVI Gold wire on Black

2. EIIR (AA) Silver wire on Black. This is new to me, never seen before.

3. EIIR Silver wire on Blue. This was last worn about 1988.

Does anyone have any other variations?

Steve

Destro,

Here are some of mine.

Mine date from circa 1975-1988 your round ones are much earlier very nice.

Last item below was produced and worn for a short time when service went from French Blue introduced in the 1970’s back in to Black in 1988 at the same time Chief officers were being fazed out.

Chiefs Badges

Here are mine framed this week after a got the EVIII badge, the one bottom left was worn by me in the early 1980s just prior to the Chief Officers demise. The bottom right is a gap filler waiting for that elusive pre 1930's badge

Very nicely displayed. Thank you for sharing!

I agree, very nicely done! May I ask what the white cord is - whistle lanyard maybe?

The white "cord" was worn across the front of the Chief's cap, as in bullstrap fashion. If you look at the earlier post featuring the caps themselves you will see it in situ.

What do you Prison & Police collectors feel about these two badges.

Grouped together with my Military Crown in Wreath badge in my Warrant Officer section, I have never been sure about them.

In light of this thread I thought they may possibly be prison/police related.

The Large QVC one is silver bullion and the smaller KC is gold bullion.

Any views appreciated.

Simon, Thank you posting there is certainly a similarity in you badges to the prison badges. Unfortunately despite me trying to compare them with the photos I have I'm unable to give a definitive answer.
The lack of any book on the subject of prison insignia and the lack of support from institutions with the resources to help in such a project doesn't help.
Maybe others can help with giving you an answer.

Manchester’s,
As Victorian badges & buttons were Brass for officers and bullion were believed to be gilt, as this magnificent badge is silver I would propose a police item as their buttons and badges tend to be white metal.

The badge on the right I have no idea of the organisation it is to but yet again a splendid badge.

Bantam is spot on insignia is difficult to research for HMP frustratingly and he is very knowledgeable on the subject as is Frank FHWhittle and Destro.

Altcar badge is a known patten and is seen worn in photographs albeit black and white

Regards to all

Stephen
