Terrible
If it is a copy, it is very good.

I buy regularly from the auction house in question and have never seen them hold a specialist militaria sale. Neither was I aware that they hold themselves out to be experts on militaria.

I have bought from that auction house (medals) and did not have a problem with either the medals or their service.

The gent selling the medal should really seek some formal resolution. Simply "giving up" because of the auctioneers failure to respond is not appropriate. He needs to look at the conditions of sale and then do something positive i.e. contact Trading Standards in Carmarthen. If he doesn't do that then I'd suggest that he's not that bothered.

Auction houses regularly overstate their expertise, its part of the sales pitch I suppose, no one should really be surprised if yet another does so.

Dave.

Maybe some research before bidding could have prevented this from happening?

Looks like this was the one :

One point about the description confused me !

I bought this Military Cross as genuine and for my own collection.

After a few days the buyer got in touch and according to Liverpool Medals, where he took it they said, not genuine

The hammer price alone should have rung alarm bells.

You cant buy an MC for less than £500 especially on on on line worldwide auction.

Buyer beware.

Poor chap. Doubtless it’s one of Henry Lyttel’s (aka Badgeman) examples.

For benefit of members unfamiliar with the name or case: https://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/new...elling-4208225

Wonder just how many people have one of these in their collections without realising.

He sold the medal on on ebay - it was his buyer who took the medal to Liverpool Medals.

So he bought it for 'his collection' in late March and then sold it soon after. As a seller medals appear in his feedback pretty much as far back as it goes. Of course ebay is where we all offload spares but imo this is just a general antiques and collectables dealer who has been caught out.

As I said though, it is a very good copy, the only give-away IMO is the machining marking on the rear, otherwise very good. If you weren't aware of that, it could easily fool...
Cheers,
Alex

OK , I didn't read the description properly but still find the whole thing a bit odd.

He buys the medal for £338.80 on 30th March 2022 without checking if it was genuine.

He gets the medal but still doesn't check if it is genuine.

He sell it on eBay for £360.00 and the buyer then gets it checked out.

It must have then been returned to him , and payment refunded , and he lists it again with a starting price of £48.00

So , within 3 month he bought an expensive badge , needed extra cash so sold it , had it returned and is willing to basically write off £290.00 !

I’m with you on this one Keith.
Furthermore his claim about the auctioneers holding themselves out as militaria specialists is completely spurious. What they do state is that they have a firearms and weapons expert in house. In addition the sale he made his purchase from was a regular monthly auction and not a specialist militaria one.
I’m minded to bring this chaps allegations to their notice when I pop in there next Friday to pick up a lot I purchased from them recently, and which I may add they have been kind enough to hold onto for me until I am passing without charge.

I feel the forums sympathyometer on this one is registering zero.
caveat emptor as always when buying at auctions.

Cheers,
Alex

As it was in a frame when sold at auction (and on eBay) there was no way of seeing the rear , so anyone buying it should have been aware of that fact and took a risk.
