Sandcast / locally made Leeds Rifles and Sussex Regiment badges - real or fake?
 

Hi all,

Would anyone be able to advise if these badges are genuine WW1 / WW2 period locally made / sandcast badges?

They are:1) Leeds Rifles badge and 2) Sussex Regiment badges.

Both are made of brass and are solid / thick metal, although the definition is somewhat crude. It could be argued they appear to be too well made to be fakes, though one could also take the opposite view that they are in fact rough / poor copies.

Any advice / guidance as to whether these are genuine or not would be much appreciated.

Unfortunately I must say they are crude copies in my opinion. Cast badges similar to these were made in India and elsewhere, but the characteristics are different.
Of the two, the Leeds looks a bit better and might have a slight chance of being a "period" copy, but....

If you look at Tiger Pete Royal Sussex collection 2 genuine examples are there .Both ex my R Sussex collection

Hi STMA,

Your photographs put the badges in shadow because of the lighting.

If you take a look in my Royal Sussex Regiment album, you will find three examples to help you make an objective assessment.

I cannot comment on The Leeds Rifles as it's outside my area.

You should see if the two units - Leeds Rifles and did have a Battalion of the Sussex Regt - were in India or Egypt.........

Leeds Rifles were in France for the war.

Alan makes a good point, and the 2nd/6th Royal Sussex were in India c.1916-'19.

The Leeds Rifles badge in the opening post is that of the inter-war period 7th/8th Battalion so is unlikely to be the real deal.
