Gents, for interests sake.

Amongst some other documents my Dad showed me today was these for his Uncle who served in the Home Guard.

Interesting to see a double period of service on one certificate - not seen that before - do you know why this was?

My Dad tells me that Uncle Ted was very ill ( as in probably wont make it, very ill) with TB. He did however recover and his service continued. Not definite, but my Dad did recall his being very I'll indeed - perhaps discharged initially?

Ok chaps, I have canvassed a couple of cousins and I believe I have revealed the cause of the separate service dates.

Ted was in the Home Guard in Dalston, in East London ( Hackney area). The family were bombed out and moved to live with extended family in Halstead in Essex. There he joined the local HG unit which accounted for the hiatus in his service.

A story he once told my cousin was that when at his new unit in Essex there was an accident during a live grenade throwing practice and a man was killed , saving some of the other Home Guard servicemen.
