Provost Staff Corp - or is it?
 

The bottom left badge I’ve seen sold as Norfolk Yeomanry as well as Provost Staff Corps. To muddy the waters further Cox also shows it in his book as 938 Canadian Military Headquarters.

I’ve listed it as Provost Staff Corps in my collection as that seems to be the weightiest opinion. Am I right though? Is there any pictorial evidence for any of the above or am I just following the loudest voices in the herd?

I would also label that one as provosts. The Canadian HQ badge is the same but is on lugs if i recall correctly.

Norfolk Yeo is bigger with the lettering being more open.

I have no pictures as proof, just what i have come to understand.

The Norfolks are indeed much larger.

It had other less glamourous uses and there is a photo on the forum of a Barrack warden with it in his cap.

Just to add to the confusion, the same badge was worn by the Royal Park Keepers and a plethora of Government employed messengers and other staff.

I do agree with all that's been said. I was unsure due to the two different George V Provost designs. The design we are discussing not being in KK whereas the other is. Why have two designs?

I also remember a put down (well perhaps not a put down - but you know the written word) - on the forum from a Norfolk specialist 'advising' that the larger badge that Alan shows was not a cap badge at all, but used elsewhere on the uniform - perhaps he said the shoulder. I took it then that he was implying the smaller badge was the Norfolk Yeomanry CAP badge.

Was he talking about the large GVI version?

It does come with a slider for the hat so I am not sure where it would go with that fixing! You can find them lugged and they could be for something else but in this case I think the slider is for a hat. I am not ruling out the smaller one for a beret/GS cap post 1942 mind you and remain open minded.

I think you have it Alan. It was this large GVIR badge in particular - on LOOPS! Unfortunately I don't think the reason why it was something other than a cap was explained and in particular the reason being down to the loops. However, I can see that now...........

I will also remain with an open mind on the smaller GVR version, but I think until I am shown otherwise it'll remain on the Provost card under sentence of immediate transfer.................

Yes that is the looped badge that is a contender for something else.

I think the ones with loops were worn on the shoulder chains.

The small type Gv badge was also Royal Defence Corps.

If this is the one you mean it has 3 scrolls with Royal Defence Corps on them.

Amongst the various uses of this design don't forget to add Military School masters and also its use as part of the ADC appointment insignia.
