Unknown British fur hat

This is a British army fur hat, with a date stamp N for either 1942 or 1943. Sadly the label has been removed.
Who can give me the official nomenclature? And is there any evidence it was worn during WW2?

Possibly a limited issue to 52 (Lowland) Inf Div in their Mountain role? Mike

An old "Militaria" mag (I think) showed a reconstruction of a British soldier wearing similar headgear at Narvik / Lofoten Islands.
Is it not in "British Army Uniforms and Equipment..........." by B L Davies?

I've found the magazine (issue 15 of April 1995), it shows a similar cap but with outer body of the cap in khaki cloth, only the ear flaps and turn up in sheepskin.

Hi Luc,
It looks like a Royal Navy service number penned with the prefix L in picture 4,
Royal Marines /Arctic Convoys or similar????

Could be could'nt it? I suspect that as with previous issues of fur garments they could vary considerably in the detail? Unfortunately I only have old Swedish sheepskin and WWII era German rabbit fur caps to compare, no British.

Just a thought - would RN clothing have the WD and "crows foot" markings?

The 'Crows Foot' > Broad Arrow (Government owned) was introduced in the 16th Century by the Board of Ordnance who's responsibility it was was to provide supplies to all ships of the Kings Navy, the symbol has stayed in use through various name changes most recent being the War Department and now the MoD, the printed stamps on uniforms etc are a sign it has been through inspection with various letters used WD being the most common, The N above on the cap is for The date,. WD being for British, other Commonwealth countries used different letters to WD such as DD for Australia and NZ for New Zealand with the Broad Arrow
It was also used by the Prison Service
Codes and stock numbers which differed between services where usually on the labels sewn in the uniform item
It has the same status as a hallmark and should not be forged.
Paul

The date letter N indicates it passed inspection in 1943

Too many numbers for RN and I think the RM had even less numbers.

Quite late post-War too - my number allocated in August 1960 was 23728467. I seem to remember in one British unit's account of Korea that such hats were traded from Canadians - which might account for those worn in the Tim's picture of the Gloucesters. Mike
