SAS Beret Modern era 1980-1990's?
 

Hi Team

Here is another beret I won and seeking opinions of era.

This is a Henry Dubora custom(?) Beret.

If this a custom Beret would that be called Private Purchase?

The Flash looks to me on an angle , however my eyesite is a bit wonky these days!!

Much appreciated for any opinions and education on this and the Para beret.

Hi Phill, private purchase beret indeed, they were liked because they were what was known as a small crown, not so much material when shaping! Du Bora's also purchased the remaining stock from 'Victors' at the bottom of the town in Aldershot, they were also short crown, these were made after that.

Hi Phill, left there myself in '84, so would have been a couple of years after that so late '80s, I purchased another 'victors' small crown myself from Du Bora in '89 so between 84-89, someone there at the time would be able to confirm. Regards Mark

Can you educate me on why was there a "small crown", was it just because of shaping or a style/look of wearing a beret?

‘Small crown’ refers to the size/volume of the beret - it means they are generally smaller than those used in WWII and into the 1950s and 1960s - less overhanging the side of the head when pulled down by the right ear. They were/are viewed as more stylish and smarter than the issue lid, although the issue beret has now also shrunk in line with the private purchase variant.
