Looks HLI to me also, they wore a plain glengarry, no dicing,as the glengarry’s are in the group photo,so that fits.

The 9th (Glasgow Highlanders) Battalion HLI, were the only unit [erratum - so did the 6th - see post below] of that battalion to wear the kilt during WW1. Dressed similarly to the Black Watch, even down to the badge, they nevertheless wore the HLI style shoulder titles.

Neither the sporran nor the shape of the cap badge in subject photo looks right for 9th HLI.

The visible sporran suggests perhaps a Territorial Force Battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, wearing it’s own pattern of glengarry and badge.

The man in the centre is a piper and it’s his sporran, often not the same as the rest of the regiment, that will probably lead to the unit’s identification.

Found it, with some help from a fellow enthusiast. It appears to be the 6th (City of Glasgow) Battalion HLI, whose pipers wore that style of sporran. Like the 9th, the 6th were also a kilted unit, but wore a Mackenzie kilt as opposed to the 9th’s Government tartan. Interestingly the 6th seem to have worn an Atholl bonnet at the beginning of the war. The rather elderly piper in the photo suggests that the unit is probably second or third line, i.e. 2/6th or 3/6th.
