Hi All,

just a heads up on a superb book I have just purchased - The Lost Tommies. large book packed with superb high definition photos. A few for sale on ebay and I highly recommend it. Photos are previously unseen and were found in a metal chest in French farmhouse several years ago.

Cheers, mark

BBC "One Show" website has lots of background information.

"The photographs were taken by a French couple, Louis and Antoinette Thuillier during the First World War and are a fantastic and very natural collection of portraits of Allied soldiers who were billeted in the village when they were away from the trenches."

"What makes the pictures all the more powerful is that the village of Vignacourt was a days march from the frontline that would be the centre of the Battle of the Somme, so a lot of the men who had their photos taken would have died weeks or even days later. "

I will second that. I bought the book when it was published and yes it is a superb book. I found it to be quite moving given that we have no idea of how many of the men in the photos actually survived.
Cheers

It really is a fascinating book and there are some tremendously powerful images in it that truly are food for thought. I have noticed though that there are a few errors in there that need correcting. The men on pages 297, 298, 299 and 302 that the author describes as members of the Royal Engineers are in fact all members of the British West Indies Regiment. The group of officers in plate 300 on page 261, described as "Unidentified", are Leeds Rifles. Plate 90 on page 79 shows an ASC man and not RE. Plate 414 on page 339, the man seated front right is ASC, not RA. There may be others as well but I don't want to knock the book too much as it really is a brilliant piece of work. Sorry if I appear pedantic but we badgers are like that. :)
