Early in the Second World War, when the Canadian Divisions were being organized, it was suggested that officers wear formation signs with distinctive elements. 2 Canadian Infantry Division had their CII sign and officers continued to wear that patch on walking out dress. The other divisions considered the use of devices, and the spur was proposed for 5 Canadian Armoured Division. Before being adopted, the idea was considered impractical and unnecessary. The device was not authorized. This is one of a handful of patches made, likely a trial badge.
